Pure silver (99.9%) itself doesn’t usually cause discoloration, but most jewelry is made from sterling silver (92.5% silver + 7.5% copper or other metals).
The copper in sterling silver reacts with moisture, acids, and sweat on your skin, forming copper salts (like copper chloride or copper carbonate). These can leave a greenish tint.
In some cases, silver sulfide (from reaction with sulfur in the air or in your skin) can leave a black or dark gray stain.
Tips to prevent it:
- Keep your silver jewelry dry and clean.
- Apply a thin coat of clear nail polish on the inside of the ring band.
- Avoid wearing it while swimming, exercising, or applying lotions and perfumes.
